In the captivating documentary, Dastan-e-Rafi, the velvety voice of Kishan Sharma, the All India Radio Announcer, unveils the intriguing narrative of Mohammad Rafi’s humble beginnings.
Before finding solace in his own abode, Rafi Villa in Bandra, Mohammad Rafi’s journey began in the bustling neighborhood of Almeda Park, not far from Manna Dey’s residence.
Upon arriving in Mumbai from Pakistan, Rafi Sahab and his companion, Hameed bhai, resided in a modest ten feet by ten feet room in the crowded enclave of Bhendi Bazar. In the early dawn, Rafi Sahab embarked on a ritual of dedication, heading to Marine Drive to conduct his riyaz on the beach.
It was during these moments that the renowned singer, Suraiya, who dwelled near Marine Drive, became enchanted by Rafi Sahab’s melodious voice. Intrigued, she sent her servants to investigate the source of the enchanting tunes, and they returned with the revelation that it was none other than Mohammad Rafi.
Impressed and moved by his talent, Suraiya extended an invitation, “Rafi Sahab, I will be honoured if you come to my flat and conduct your morning riyaz comfortably.“
Curious about his choice of location for riyaz, she inquired, “Why do you need to travel so far to Chowpatti for your morning riyaz?“
Rafi Sahab, with humility, shared his rationale, “The neighborhood where I live is cramped with small rooms and numerous residents. If I practice my riyaz there, it would disturb everyone. Additionally, there are many dogs in the area that start barking when I sing early in the morning at 4:00/4:30. It’s not practical. I decided that it would be better to do my riyaz under the open sky on the beach. It won’t disturb others, and it’s refreshing for me.“
This marked the beginning of an era where Mohammad Rafi conducted his morning riyaz at Suraiya’s residence, finding a tranquil haven for his musical pursuits.
As time unfolded, Mohammad Rafi’s destiny took a turn, leading him to a significant opportunity. He collaborated with Suraiya for the timeless composition Main Kah Doon Tumko Chor Toh Bolo Kya Karoge … for the film, Sanam (1951).
In essence, these early chapters of Mohammad Rafi’s life not only depict his unwavering dedication to his craft but also reveal the profound impact of his musical journey on the hearts of those who encountered his soul-stirring melodies.
The story of Rafi Sahab’s humble beginnings serves as a testament to the perseverance and passion that paved the way for one of the greatest voices in the history of Indian music.
